WASHINGTON — In his 2009 speech to the Mus­lim world, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama announced a new effort to erad­i­cate polio, which per­sists in three Mus­lim coun­tries. One of the biggest hur­dles had been per­suad­ing some local lead­ers that vac­ci­na­tion cam­paigns were inde­pen­dent health efforts, not nefar­i­ous pro­grams being run by the CIA.

Gates: NATO alliance future could be ‘dim, dismal’

RUSSELS — In a stern rebuke, U.S. Defense Sec­re­tary Robert Gates warned Fri­day that the future of the his­toric NATO mil­i­tary alliance is at risk because of Euro­pean penny-pinching and dis­taste for front-line com­bat. The United States won’t carry the alliance as a char­ity case, the out­go­ing Pen­ta­gon chief said.

1,440 Thousands of Syrian troops raid rebellious city

Thou­sands of sol­diers backed by tanks and snipers moved in before dawn to the city where Syria’s anti-government upris­ing began, caus­ing panic in the streets when they opened fire indis­crim­i­nately on civil­ians and went house-to-house round­ing up sus­pected pro­test­ers. At least 11 peo­ple were killed and 14 oth­ers lay in the streets — either dead or gravely wounded, wit­nesses said.
