2 US Navy ships collide in Pacific; no injuries

SAN DIEGO — An 844-foot-long U.S. Navy assault ship col­lided with a refu­el­ing tanker Wednes­day in the Pacific Ocean, caus­ing dam­age to both ships, but there were no injuries or fuel spills, mil­i­tary offi­cials said.

WASHINGTON — Pen­ta­gon lead­ers scram­bled Thurs­day to con­tain dam­age from an Inter­net video pur­port­ing to show four Marines uri­nat­ing on Tal­iban corpses — an act that appears to vio­late inter­na­tional laws of war­fare and fur­ther strains U.S.-Afghan relations.

WASHINGTON — The Marine Corps said Wednes­day it is inves­ti­gat­ing a video depict­ing what appears to be four Marines uri­nat­ing on the corpses of Tal­iban fight­ers. In a state­ment, the Marine Corps said it has not ver­i­fied the ori­gin or authen­tic­ity of the YouTube video. But it also said the actions por­trayed are not con­sis­tent with Marine values.

TEHRAN, Iran — The U.S. strongly warned Iran on Wednes­day against clos­ing a vital Per­sian Gulf water­way that car­ries one-sixth of the world’s oil sup­ply, after Iran threat­ened to choke off traf­fic through the Strait of Hor­muz if Wash­ing­ton imposes sanc­tions tar­get­ing the country’s crude exports.

Veterans recognized at annual ceremony

Three Delaware County vet­er­ans have con­tin­ued serv­ing oth­ers even after com­plet­ing their com­mit­ment to the mil­i­tary. In recog­ni­tion of that ser­vice, they were each declared “out­stand­ing vet­er­ans” dur­ing a Vet­er­ans Day cer­e­mony at the Delaware County Cen­ter for Older Adults.
