As time goes by

When the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, time will be on our collective mind. Astronomers can measure these temporal milestones with incredible accuracy, of course. All you time aficionados will probably note that the ball will drop a few seconds too late or too early. It always does.

A gift to the library is a gift to the community

As 2011 draws to a close, if you are considering donating to various causes, organizations and charities, please include the Delaware County District Library in your considerations. Donating to the Library is a long-standing tradition in Delaware, and each year we receive several thousands of dollars from patrons who are honoring or remembering loved ones.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress lurched toward Grinch-like gridlock on Tuesday as the Republican-controlled House rejected a two-month extension of Social Security tax cuts that President Barack Obama said was “the only viable way” to prevent a drop in take-home pay for 160 million workers on Jan. 1.

NEW YORK — The overnight police raids in Philadelphia and Los Angeles that dismantled two of the nation’s biggest Occupy Wall Street encampments leave just a few major “occupations” still going on around the U.S. But activists are already changing tactics and warning of a winter of discontent, with rallies and marches every week.

Congress dodges one crisis, now on to the next

WASHINGTON (AP) — One crisis averted, on to the next. The day after Congress managed to avoid a government shutdown — again — Republicans and Democrats stared ahead Tuesday at major fights over spending that underscore a deep divide that’s sure to define the fast-approaching national elections.

Saturn: Ancient and modern

The glorious planet Saturn is still visible just after dark in the southwestern sky. It’s hard to miss. Look for a bright, yellowish point of light near the star Porrima in the constellation Virgo. Of its famous rings I have previously written, but here are a few vital statistics. In a small telescope, you aren’t really looking at rings at all. Instead, you are seeing a billion trillion mostly tiny moonlets orbiting around the planet. They are merely arranged in rings. If you clumped them all together, they would amount to a pathetic hunk of rock just 40 or so miles wide. Spread out as they are, they form a diaphanous field of glory so large that the rings would barely fit between Earth and its moon.
