After protest, Congress puts off movie piracy bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cav­ing to a mas­sive cam­paign by Inter­net ser­vices and their mil­lions of users, Con­gress indef­i­nitely post­poned leg­is­la­tion Fri­day to stop online piracy of movies and music cost­ing U.S. com­pa­nies bil­lions of dol­lars every year. Crit­ics said the bills would result in cen­sor­ship and sti­fle Inter­net innovation.

Tren­ton Town­ship res­i­dents Jim Aust and Tracy Disbato-Aust have grown almost accus­tomed to com­pet­ing at the national and inter­na­tional level as triath­letes. They train reg­u­larly as mem­bers of Team USA; they com­pete through­out the sum­mer months both locally and nation­ally in the 50 to 54 age group.

The biggest study ever to exam­ine the pos­si­ble con­nec­tion between cell­phones and can­cer found no evi­dence of any link, sug­gest­ing that bil­lions of peo­ple who are rarely more than a few inches from their phones have no spe­cial health concerns.

UNITED NATIONS — Amer­i­can diplo­mats led a walk­out at the U.N. Gen­eral Assem­bly Thurs­day as Iran’s Pres­i­dent Mah­moud Ahmadine­jad fiercely attacked the United States and major West Euro­pean nations as “arro­gant pow­ers” ruled by greed and eager for mil­i­tary adventurism.

A mighty fall for U.S. economic prestige

By now every­one is aware that the U.S. gov­ern­ment has lost some­thing the coun­try has pos­sessed since 1917 — its “best-of-the-best” stamp of finan­cial approval from all major debt rat­ings agen­cies. Last Fri­day Stan­dard and Poor’s down­graded U.S. Trea­sury secu­ri­ties from AAA to AA+, sug­gest­ing the U.S. gov­ern­ment seems a lit­tle less likely to repay in a timely fash­ion both prin­ci­pal and inter­est on Trea­sury securities.
