Bombs rock Baghdad, raising fears of sectarian war

BAGHDAD (AP) — A ter­ri­fy­ing wave of bombs tore through mostly Shi­ite neigh­bor­hoods of Bagh­dad on Thurs­day, killing at least 69 peo­ple and evok­ing fears that Iraq could dis­solve into a new round of sec­tar­ian vio­lence now that Amer­i­can troops have left.

Politi­cians feuded along the country’s poten­tially explo­sive sec­tar­ian lines and the drum­beat of deadly vio­lence went on.

War nearly over, Obama says Iraq won’t stand alone

WASHINGTON — Eager to put the long and divi­sive Iraq war to rest, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama declared Mon­day “those days are over” with the last Amer­i­can troops head­ing home, but he pledged the U.S. would remain com­mit­ted to the fledg­ling gov­ern­ment they leave behind. He and Iraq’s leader somberly saluted America’s war dead at Arling­ton National Cemetery.

Iraq war over, US troops coming home, Obama says

WASHINGTON — America’s long and deeply unpop­u­lar war in Iraq will be over by year’s end and all U.S. troops “”will def­i­nitely be home for the hol­i­days,” Pres­i­dent Barack Obama declared Fri­day. Stretch­ing more than eight years, the war cost the United States heav­ily: More than 4,400 mem­bers of the mil­i­tary have been killed, and more than 32,000 have been wounded.
