Chicago protesters break away from nurses’ rally

CHICAGO — Hun­dreds of pro­test­ers broke away from a large rally and began march­ing through Chicago streets Fri­day, taunt­ing police and shout­ing about every­thing from bank bailouts to nuclear power — a pre­lude to even big­ger demon­stra­tions expected after the start of a NATO summit.

CHICAGO — Less than a month old, Savan­nah Dan­nel­ley scrunches her tiny face into a scowl as a nurse gen­tly squirts a dose of methadone into her mouth. The infant is going through drug with­drawal and is being treated with the same nar­cotic pre­scribed for her mother to fight addic­tion to pow­er­ful pre­scrip­tion painkillers.

Serving the innate urge for intellectual content

As part of my job as direc­tor, I spend a great deal of time read­ing pro­fes­sional lit­er­a­ture, keep­ing up with library trends, con­cerns and news. I recently ran across an arti­cle that I found to be par­tic­u­larly appro­pri­ate, in light of the many changes occur­ring in pub­lic libraries. The author is a library direc­tor in Cal­i­for­nia, a woman who “tells it like it is” and often cuts right to the heart of the matter.

WASHINGTON — Pres­i­dent Barack Obama’s Medicare nom­i­nee Tues­day got unex­pected sup­port from one of Con­gress’ Repub­li­can stars. House Major­ity Leader Eric Can­tor told The Asso­ci­ated Press that Mar­i­lyn Taven­ner is “emi­nently qual­i­fied” to run Medicare.
