A conversation With Pat Tiberi

Congressman Pat Tiberi was home recently. It was Election Day and an ideal time to touch base with constituents, discuss their concerns and also let them know what is happening in Washington. During his visit, he took time out of a busy schedule for an interview with The Sunbury News.

Voters to choose 2 governors, decide ballot issues

COLUMBUS (AP) — Votes on immigration, union rights and President Obama’s health care law could hold hints of the American public’s mindset, four years into an economic downturn and one year from the presidential election.

College prices up again as states slash budgets

As President Obama prepared to announce new measures Wednesday to help ease the burden of student loan debt, new figures painted a demoralizing picture of college costs for students and parents: Average in-state tuition and fees at four-year public colleges rose an additional $631 this fall, or 8.3 percent, compared with a year ago.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — President Barack Obama urged enthusiastic college students Wednesday to join him in his fight to get Congress to act on his new jobs bill. “Every single one of you can help make this bill a reality,” the president called out at a hot and noisy rally at North Carolina State University.

Another disappointing year; another stimulus proposal

In what appears to be an annual ritual, a president has proposed yet another stimulus plan to reinvigorate economic growth and put Americans back to work. This seemingly never-ending series of quick-fixes began in the final year of the Bush administration with temporary tax rebates (at $150+ billion), followed by a huge fiscal stimulus package in 2009 (with an approximate cost of $830 billion), an end-of-the-year measure in 2010 (with an estimated 10-year price tag of $850 billion), and now the latest jobs proposal of 2011, which will set the nation back another $447 billion. All told, these four efforts to pump life into an ailing economy come in well north of $2 trillion.

A modest pre-Labor Day jobs proposal

For the past several weeks, political pundits have said the next presidential election will pivot around three issues: jobs, jobs and jobs. Recently, as the Republican Iowa straw poll was unfolding, President Obama undertook a three-state bus tour to tout an upcoming jobs proposal to be unfurled after Labor Day. Many wonder why, with so many people unemployed, the Obama administration would choose to sit on any serious proposal to end such suffering. But perhaps that’s part of the magic of political life that we unthinking little drones fail to comprehend.
