BOSTON — Don’t look for a vice pres­i­den­tial shocker from Mitt Rom­ney. His choice of a running-mate — a search he announced Mon­day he has begun — will be guided by both his method­i­cal, risk-averse cor­po­rate train­ing and the lessons his party learned from Sarah Palin’s selection.

WASHINGTON — Pres­i­dent Barack Obama announced unex­pect­edly on Mon­day that chief of staff William Daley was quit­ting and head­ing home, cap­ping a short and rocky tenure that had been expected to last until Elec­tion Day in November.

Congress dodges one crisis, now on to the next

WASHINGTON (AP) — One cri­sis averted, on to the next. The day after Con­gress man­aged to avoid a gov­ern­ment shut­down — again — Repub­li­cans and Democ­rats stared ahead Tues­day at major fights over spend­ing that under­score a deep divide that’s sure to define the fast-approaching national elections.

Budget deficit slips to $1.28T; red ink continues

WASHINGTON — After months of unre­lieved gloom and dis­cord, Con­gress and Pres­i­dent Barack Obama are start­ing to make a dent in the fed­eral bud­get deficit. It’s pro­jected to shrink slightly to $1.28 tril­lion this year, and big­ger sav­ings from this month’s debt ceil­ing deal are fore­cast over the next decade. No one’s cel­e­brat­ing. There will be plenty of red ink for years to come.
