
Ending a 14-year 4-H career on a high note, Melissa Downerd earned the coveted Showman of Showmen title Wednesday afternoon at the Delaware County Fair. Bubbling with excitement, Melissa, with 4-H group Loin Hustlers, also earned showman for dairy feeder, showman for dairy cow, grand champion heifer, grand champion and reserve for junior heifer and grand champion for dairy feeder. And to top it off, she is also this year’s queen of the Delaware County Fair.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Howard Bryan, an Ohio-born writer who moved to New Mexico to become one of the state’s most well-known journalists and the author of a number of books about his adopted state, died Saturday, publisher and friend Marcia Keegan said. He was 91. Keehan said Bryan died in his Albuquerque home from a cancerous tumor in his nose.

Given the way the financial world is holding its collective breath, one might suppose Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is cut from the same magical cloth as his predecessor, “Maestro” Alan Greenspan. In earlier times, every word that dropped from the lips of Chairman Greenspan was treated as though it came from the Delphi Oracle given his seemingly inexhaustible ability to fine tune a faltering economy. It was only after he left the central bank that markets realized just how misdirected his loose monetary policy actions were. While still denied by Mr. Bernanke (one of Greenspan’s confederates at the time), most analysts agree that excessive money growth, low interest rates, and a loose regulatory environment contributed to the housing crisis that caused the U.S. and world financial markets to nearly implode.

For the past several weeks, political pundits have said the next presidential election will pivot around three issues: jobs, jobs and jobs. Recently, as the Republican Iowa straw poll was unfolding, President Obama undertook a three-state bus tour to tout an upcoming jobs proposal to be unfurled after Labor Day. Many wonder why, with so many people unemployed, the Obama administration would choose to sit on any serious proposal to end such suffering. But perhaps that’s part of the magic of political life that we unthinking little drones fail to comprehend.
