Christmas attacks in Nigeria by sect kill 39

LAGOS, Nige­ria — Ter­ror attacks across Nige­ria by a rad­i­cal Mus­lim sect killed at least 39 peo­ple, with the major­ity dying on the steps of a Catholic church after cel­e­brat­ing Christ­mas Mass as blood pooled in dust from a mas­sive explosion.

US: Sect bomb attacks possible in Nigeria capital

LAGOS, Nige­ria (AP) — After a week­end of vio­lence and fear, U.S. offi­cials warned Sun­day that lux­ury hotels fre­quented by for­eign­ers and Nigeria’s elite may be bombed by a rad­i­cal Mus­lim sect as the death toll from attacks in the country’s north­east rose to more than 100.

Libya declared free, but Gadhafi death questioned

But they laid out plans with an Islamist tone that could rat­tle their West­ern backers.

Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi killed in hometown battle

SIRTE, Libya — Moam­mar Gad­hafi, Libya’s dic­ta­tor for 42 years until he was ousted in an uprising-turned-civil war, was killed Thurs­day as rev­o­lu­tion­ary fight­ers over­whelmed his home­town of Sirte and cap­tured the last major bas­tion of resis­tance two months after his regime fell. The 69-year-old Gad­hafi is the first leader to be killed in the Arab Spring wave of pop­u­lar upris­ings that swept the Mid­dle East, demand­ing the end of auto­cratic rulers and the estab­lish­ment of greater democracy.

Saudis hold their last all-male election

RIYADH, Saudi Ara­bia — Saudi Ara­bia held its sec­ond nation­wide vote ever on Thurs­day, a male-only elec­tion for pow­er­less munic­i­pal coun­cils. The bal­lot­ing comes just days after the king decreed that women will be able to par­tic­i­pate for the first time in the next local elec­tions in 2015, a mea­sure likely aimed at head­ing off Arab Spring-style dis­sent in the kingdom.
