WASHINGTON — Repub­li­cans ignored a veto threat and over­came a rebel­lion by party con­ser­v­a­tives to push a bill through the House Fri­day keep­ing inter­est rates on mil­lions of fed­eral stu­dent loans from dou­bling this summer.

WASHINGTON — The White House threat­ened a veto Fri­day of a Repub­li­can bill keep­ing the inter­est rates on fed­eral stu­dent loans from dou­bling this sum­mer, object­ing that the mea­sure would finance its $5.9 bil­lion cost by abol­ish­ing a health care program.

Speaker: House to vote Friday on student loans

WASHINGTON — In an esca­lat­ing election-year clash, the House will vote Fri­day on a $5.9 bil­lion Repub­li­can bill pre­vent­ing inter­est rates on fed­eral stu­dent loans from dou­bling this sum­mer, paid for by cut­ting money from Pres­i­dent Barack Obama’s health care over­haul law.

How bet­ter to get set­tlers to move into uncharted and untamed lands than to promise them the sus­tain­abil­ity and wealth that comes from the own­er­ship of land? Give them the land for free on the promise that they will go and set­tle that land, turn­ing it from wilder­ness to use­able farm­land, tim­ber­land or pas­ture. The pol­icy worked for Amer­ica, it worked for the Span­ish in Florida and it worked for Mex­ico in parts of what is now the Amer­i­can Southwest.

300-foot buffer proposed for Ohio park drilling

COLUMBUS — A state nat­ural resource agency’s pro­posed rules for drilling in state parks would require nat­ural gas and oil com­pa­nies to stay at least 300 feet — the length of a foot­ball field — from camp­grounds, cer­tain water­ways and sites deemed his­tor­i­cally or archae­o­log­i­cally valuable.

Shale boom could be heading Delaware County’s way

While the Cen­tral Ohio gas and oil boom has yet to get under way, it could prove to be a major eco­nomic boost for Delaware County and its res­i­dents when it does com­mence if other Ohio coun­ties are any indication.

COLUMBUS — Nat­ural gas wells using the drilling method known as hydraulic frac­tur­ing are pro­duc­ing at a much higher rate than tra­di­tional wells, accord­ing to the first look at pro­duc­tion fig­ures from nine active wells in the Utica Shale for­ma­tion in east­ern Ohio.
