It’s on: GOP, Democrats fight over women voters

WASHINGTON — Is the 2012 elec­tion shap­ing up to be all about women? Pres­i­dent Barack Obama is work­ing hard to woo this piv­otal con­stituency in his re-election race. His Demo­c­ra­tic allies are even accus­ing the GOP of launch­ing a “war against women” after the Repub­li­cans reignited a new national debate over cul­tural issues, includ­ing birth control.

Senate defeats bill to reverse birth control rule

WASHINGTON — The Sen­ate on Thurs­day defeated a GOP effort to roll back Pres­i­dent Barack Obama’s pol­icy on con­tra­cep­tion insur­ance cov­er­age in the first vote on an issue that raised ques­tions of reli­gious and women’s rights and riled Amer­i­cans in this volatile elec­tion year.

The next deficit deal: There’s a rough road ahead

WASHINGTON (AP) — The spe­cial panel’s goal is lofty: con­coct a deal both par­ties will embrace to slash fed­eral deficits by a mam­moth $1.5 tril­lion or more over the next decade.
