EU running out of time as Greece nears the exit

ATHENS, Greece — Euro­pean lead­ers insist they want to keep Greece in the euro­zone, but are putting off any agree­ment on how they hope to accom­plish that. Greece says it, too, wants to stay in the euro­zone, but until after elec­tions it’s uncer­tain whether it can imple­ment the aus­ter­ity that Europe has set as a con­di­tion for doing so.

NEW YORK — A big final-hour come­back pulled the Dow Jones indus­trial aver­age nearly back to where it started Wednesday.

Eurozone warned ‘severe recession’ looming

PARIS — The 17-country euro­zone risks falling into a “severe reces­sion,” the Orga­ni­za­tion for Eco­nomic Coop­er­a­tion and Devel­op­ment warned on Tues­day, as it called on gov­ern­ments and Europe’s cen­tral bank to act quickly to keep the slow­down from drag­ging down the global economy.

Teachers, facing low salaries, opt to moonlight

MIAMI — By day, Wade Brosz teaches Amer­i­can his­tory at an A-rated Florida mid­dle school. By night, he is a per­sonal trainer at 24 Hour Fit­ness. Brosz took the three-night a week job at the gym after his teach­ing salary was frozen, sum­mer school was reduced dras­ti­cally, and the state bonus for board cer­ti­fied teach­ers was cut. He fig­ures that he and his wife, also a teacher, are mak­ing about $20,000 less teach­ing than expected to, combined.
