Pakistan fires defense secretary, escalates crisis

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s gov­ern­ment fired the defense sec­re­tary Wednes­day and the army warned of “griev­ous con­se­quences” for the coun­try, esca­lat­ing a polit­i­cal and legal cri­sis that some believe could end in the dis­missal of government.

Senate leaders reach tentative agreement

WASHINGTON — Sen­ate lead­ers reached ten­ta­tive agree­ment Fri­day night on leg­is­la­tion to extend Social Secu­rity pay­roll tax cuts and job­less ben­e­fits for two months while requir­ing Pres­i­dent Barack Obama to accept Repub­li­can demands for a swift deci­sion on the fate of an oil pipeline that promises thou­sands of jobs.

Congress clears $662B defense bill

WASHINGTON — Con­gress passed a mas­sive $662 bil­lion defense bill Thurs­day after months of wran­gling over how to han­dle cap­tured ter­ror sus­pects with­out vio­lat­ing Amer­i­cans’ con­sti­tu­tional rights. A last-minute com­pro­mise pro­duced a truce, but law­mak­ers said the fight is not yet over.

Afghan officials: Fire from Pakistan led to attack

ISLAMABAD — Afghanistan offi­cials claimed Sun­day that Afghan and NATO forces were retal­i­at­ing for gun­fire from two Pak­istani army bases when they called in airstrikes that killed 24 Pak­istani sol­diers, adding a layer of com­plex­ity to an episode that has fur­ther strained Pakistan’s ties with the United States.

US general fired from Afghan training job

WASHINGTON — The top U.S. com­man­der in Afghanistan has fired a senior offi­cer from his job as the No. 2 gen­eral in charge of train­ing for mak­ing inap­pro­pri­ate pub­lic remarks about Afghan Pres­i­dent Hamid Karzai and his gov­ern­ment. Gen. John Allen issued a state­ment Fri­day say­ing that Maj. Gen. Peter Fuller has been relieved of his duties as deputy com­man­der for the Afghan train­ing mission.
