WASHINGTON — Ten­sions between the rich and poor are increas­ing and at their most intense level in nearly a quarter-century, a new sur­vey shows. Amer­i­cans now see more social con­flict over wealth inequal­ity than over the hot-button top­ics of immi­gra­tion, race rela­tions and age.

The world is full of great rival­ries. There’s the Yan­kees and the Red Sox, Ohio State and Michi­gan, Microsoft vs. Apple, Rome vs. Carthage or the Hat­fields and the McCoys. WASHINGTON (AP) — Under an urgent dead­line, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama and con­gres­sional nego­tia­tors set their sights on the nation’s tax sys­tem and cher­ished ben­e­fit pro­grams Thurs­day in hopes of strik­ing a mas­sive bud­get deal to raise the nation’s debt ceil­ing. Obama said the two sides were still far apart and called every­one back to the White House on Sunday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Con­gress on Thurs­day passed a four-year exten­sion of post-Sept. 11 pow­ers to search records and con­duct rov­ing wire­taps in pur­suit of ter­ror­ists. Votes taken in rapid suc­ces­sion in the Sen­ate and House came after law­mak­ers rejected attempts to tem­per the law enforce­ment pow­ers to ensure that indi­vid­ual lib­er­ties are not abused.
