BAGHDAD (AP) — A terrifying wave of bombs tore through mostly Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 69 people and evoking fears that Iraq could dissolve into a new round of sectarian violence now that American troops have left.

Egypt’s rulers: Parliament won’t be representative

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s military rulers said Wednesday the next parliament will not be representative enough to independently oversee the drafting of a constitution, and they will appoint a council to check the influence of religious extremists on the process.

Voters to choose 2 governors, decide ballot issues

COLUMBUS (AP) — Votes on immigration, union rights and President Obama’s health care law could hold hints of the American public’s mindset, four years into an economic downturn and one year from the presidential election.

Congress dodges one crisis, now on to the next

WASHINGTON (AP) — One crisis averted, on to the next. The day after Congress managed to avoid a government shutdown — again — Republicans and Democrats stared ahead Tuesday at major fights over spending that underscore a deep divide that’s sure to define the fast-approaching national elections.

Obama’s dilemma: Should he take a vacation now?

WASHINGTON — Is there ever really a good time for the president to go on vacation? President Barack Obama’s summer getaway to Martha’s Vineyard has reignited a seemingly annual debate. Given the demands of the job and the always-looming possibility of an unexpected crisis at home or abroad, the political perils of a presidential vacation never seem to go away. This summer, the vacation dilemma is compounded by the country’s urgent demand for jobs, the debt crisis that’s left Washington with a hangover and the public’s frustration with political gridlock.
