Q&A: A look at Ohio’s crackdown on exotic animals

COLUMBUS — Ohio Gov. John Kasich has put in place temporary measures to crack down on private ownership of dangerous wild animals while tougher laws are written this fall. Some animal owner groups welcomed the order, though others have blasted it as not going far enough. Critics, including the Humane Society of the United States, say they would have preferred a ban on the purchase and sale of exotic animals. That’s what Kasich’s Democratic predecessor, former Gov. Ted Strickland, ordered before leaving office in January.

Ohio Chamber to back union law in ballot fight

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Chamber of Commerce pledged Wednesday to put money and the political clout of its 6,000 business members behind the state’s new collective bargaining law. Voters in November will consider a ballot question seeking a repeal of the law, which would let public worker unions negotiate on wages but not health care, sick time or pension benefits. The board members of the state’s largest business advocacy group voted in a Wednesday meeting to defend the law and to also back an effort to keep Ohioans from being required to buy health insurance.
