WASHINGTON (AP) — Amer­i­cans bor­rowed more in Sep­tem­ber to buy cars and attend col­lege, but they charged less to their credit cards for a third straight month. The fig­ures sug­gest that con­sumers are grow­ing more cau­tious about tak­ing on high-interest debt in a weak economy.

WASHINGTON — The wealth gap between younger and older Amer­i­cans has stretched to the widest on record, wors­ened by a pro­longed eco­nomic down­turn that has wiped out job oppor­tu­ni­ties for young adults and sad­dled them with hous­ing and col­lege debt.

NEW YORK — Higher bank fees are here to stay. The lat­est third-quarter earn­ings reports from this week con­firm that banks are strug­gling to make money the old-fashioned way, by lend­ing money to con­sumers and busi­nesses. The main rea­son: inter­est rates are at his­toric lows. That makes it harder for banks to charge high rates on loans.

4 running for 2 vacant seats on Big Walnut school board

Four can­di­dates are vying for two seats on the Big Wal­nut Local School Dis­trict Board of Edu­ca­tion Nov. 8. The terms of cur­rent board mem­bers Jim Hil­dreth and Diana Butts expire at the end of the year. Nei­ther is seek­ing re-election.

New property values posted online

An online resource list­ing the 2012 val­ues of Delaware County real estate has gone live. New val­ues can be checked by vis­it­ing co.delaware.oh.us/auditor and click­ing on the blue “2011 Prop­erty Val­ues” ban­ner across the top of the page. The web­site allows users to check their prop­er­ties by enter­ing their last name or unique par­cel ID number.

County’s real estate values shrinking

This year’s unprece­dented prop­erty reval­u­a­tion by the Delaware County Auditor’s Office is expected to shave nearly $1 bil­lion of prop­erty value from county tax registers.
