NEW YORK (AP) — From New Zealand to New York, the world eagerly wel­comed a new year Sun­day with confetti-filled cel­e­bra­tions, glit­ter­ing fire­works dis­plays and star-studded festivities.

6 cities lodge bids for 2020 Olympics

LONDON — Six cities from Europe, Asia and the Mid­dle East are com­pet­ing to host the 2020 Olympics. Sub­mit­ting bids to the Inter­na­tional Olympic Com­mit­tee by Friday’s dead­line were Rome; Madrid; Tokyo; Istan­bul; Doha, Qatar; and Baku, Azer­bai­jan. There were no sur­prises, as all six cities had pre­vi­ously announced their candidacies.

AP Sources: NBC retains Olympic rights for 4 games

LAUSANNE, Switzer­land — NBC retained its hold on U.S. Olympic tele­vi­sion rights Tues­day in a four-games deal through 2020 worth about $4.4 bil­lion, defeat­ing rival bids from ESPN and Fox, offi­cials with direct knowl­edge of the deci­sion told The Asso­ci­ated Press.
