Obama: Oil supply enough to keep squeeze on Iran

WASHINGTON — Pres­i­dent Barack Obama said Fri­day he was plow­ing ahead with poten­tial sanc­tions against coun­tries that keep buy­ing oil from Iran, includ­ing allies of the United States, in a deep­en­ing cam­paign to starve Iran of money for its dis­puted nuclear program.

US makes criminals priority for deportation

WASHINGTON — Many ille­gal immi­grants who were fac­ing depor­ta­tion despite hav­ing no crim­i­nal record will be allowed to stay in the coun­try and apply for a work per­mit under new rules from the Home­land Secu­rity Depart­ment. Repub­li­cans are balk­ing at the change. Home­land Secu­rity Sec­re­tary Janet Napoli­tano announced Thurs­day that the depart­ment will focus on deport­ing ille­gal immi­grants who are crim­i­nals or pose a threat to national secu­rity or pub­lic safety.

Senate blocks GOP bid to speed offshore drilling

WASHINGTON —A GOP bid to expand and has­ten off­shore oil drilling in the face of $4-a-gallon gaso­line prices suf­fered an over­whelm­ing defeat in the Sen­ate on Wednes­day, four days after Pres­i­dent Barack Obama directed his admin­is­tra­tion to ramp up U.S. oil production.
