Libya declared free, but Gadhafi death questioned

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libya’s interim rulers declared the coun­try lib­er­ated on Sun­day after an eight-month civil war, launch­ing the oil-rich nation on what is meant to be a two-year tran­si­tion to democ­racy. But they laid out plans with an Islamist tone that could rat­tle their West­ern backers.

SIRTE, Libya — Moam­mar Gad­hafi, Libya’s dic­ta­tor for 42 years until he was ousted in an uprising-turned-civil war, was killed Thurs­day as rev­o­lu­tion­ary fight­ers over­whelmed his home­town of Sirte and cap­tured the last major bas­tion of resis­tance two months after his regime fell. The 69-year-old Gad­hafi is the first leader to be killed in the Arab Spring wave of pop­u­lar upris­ings that swept the Mid­dle East, demand­ing the end of auto­cratic rulers and the estab­lish­ment of greater democracy.

Gadhafi son reported arrested by rebels is free

TRIPOLI, Libya — Libyan leader Moam­mar Gadhafi’s son and one-time heir appar­ent, who was reported arrested by rebels on Sun­day when they advanced on the cap­i­tal Tripoli, is free. Seif al-Islam turned up early Tues­day morn­ing at the Rixos hotel, where about 30 for­eign jour­nal­ists are stay­ing in Tripoli under the close watch of regime min­ders. He then took reporters in a con­voy of black, armored SUVs on a drive through parts of the city under the regime’s control.

The euphoric fight­ers cel­e­brated with res­i­dents of the cap­i­tal in Green Square, the sym­bolic heart of the fad­ing regime.

Defiant Gadhafi threatens attacks in Europe

TRIPOLI, Libya — A defi­ant Moam­mar Gad­hafi threat­ened Fri­day to carry out attacks in Europe against “homes, offices, fam­i­lies,” unless NATO halts its cam­paign of airstrikes against his regime in Libya.
