US Army sergeant kills 16 in Afghan villages

BALANDI, Afghanistan — Mov­ing from house to house, a U.S. Army sergeant opened fire Sun­day on Afghan vil­lagers as they slept, killing 16 peo­ple — mostly women and chil­dren — in an attack that reignited fury at the U.S. pres­ence fol­low­ing a wave of deadly protests over Amer­i­cans burn­ing Qurans.

While he remains in crit­i­cal con­di­tion in a Colum­bus hos­pi­tal fol­low­ing a severe heart attack, the quick actions of emer­gency respon­ders have helped give Delaware County Trea­surer Jon Peter­son a fight­ing chance. At the direc­tion of a Delaware County 911 dis­patcher, Melissa Peter­son admin­is­tered CPR to her hus­band on Wednes­day morn­ing while he laid on the floor of the Peter­sons’ Hill­side Drive home.
