At a time where many other public agencies are laying off employees, cutting programs and asking for tax increases to prevent doing more of either, Preservation Parks of Delaware County has handed out raises of at least 23 percent to a third of its full-time workforce. Most notable among the increases since 2009 is a 30 percent raise — almost $21,000 — given to executive director Rita Au, making her among the highest-paid government employees in Delaware County.

NEW YORK — Messages of good health and positive self-esteem for girls aren’t hard to come by in kid lit, so what’s the deal with all the attention for a not-yet-published rhyming picture book about an obese, unhappy 14-year-old named Maggie? The title, for starters: Maggie Goes on a Diet.

Shoppers lift economy but will they keep spending?

WASHINGTON — The economy might not be on the brink of another recession after all. Consumers, who drive most economic growth, spent more on cars, furniture, electronics and other goods in July — and more in May and June than previously thought. That burst of activity is encouraging because it shows many Americans were willing to spend despite high unemployment, scant pay raises, steep gas prices and diminished wealth. If it keeps up, the economy might rebound after growing at an annual rate of just 0.8 percent in the first half of 2011.
