Columbia U janitor, 52, graduates with honors

NEW YORK — For years, Gac Fil­i­paj mopped floors, cleaned toi­lets and took out trash at Colum­bia Uni­ver­sity. A refugee from war-torn Yugoslavia, he eked out a liv­ing work­ing for the elite Ivy League school. But Sun­day was pay­back time: The 52-year-old jan­i­tor donned a cap and gown to grad­u­ate with a bachelor’s degree in classics.

More Secret Service agents gone; Obama briefed

WASHINGTON — Three more Secret Ser­vice offi­cers resigned Fri­day in the expand­ing pros­ti­tu­tion scan­dal that has brought scorch­ing crit­i­cism of agents’ behav­ior in Colom­bia just before Pres­i­dent Barack Obama’s visit for a sum­mit meet­ing last week. Agency Direc­tor Mark Sul­li­van came to the White House late Fri­day to per­son­ally brief Obama in the Oval Office.

WASHINGTON — Mov­ing swiftly, the Secret Ser­vice forced out three agents Wednes­day in a pros­ti­tu­tion scan­dal that has embar­rassed Pres­i­dent Barack Obama. A senior con­gress­man wel­comed the move to hold peo­ple respon­si­ble for the tawdry episode but warned “it’s not over.”

Just one week ago I used this space to note a BBC report on the epi­demic of child abuse in Amer­ica which stressed the fact that only vig­i­lance and report­ing by the pub­lic can help stop the cycle of vio­lence against chil­dren. Our child pro­tec­tion ser­vices case­work­ers and police inves­ti­ga­tors do a spec­tac­u­lar job of inves­ti­gat­ing abuse after it has occurred but we per­pet­u­ate that abuse if we see the signs of it and fail to report it.

Parents demand lower Troy Road speed limit

Con­cerned res­i­dents this week asked Delaware City Coun­cil to address dan­ger­ous traf­fic on Troy Road, cit­ing inci­dences in which they believe motorists — includ­ing school bus dri­vers — are putting lives at risk. Danessa Hig­gins appeared dis­traught when she retold how two buses “flew” down the road while she and a young child were attempt­ing to cross the street.

You may have noticed peo­ple on the streets of Delaware hold­ing PDAs and mea­sur­ing street trees. The data col­lec­tion is being done by the Delaware County Mas­ter Gar­dener Vol­un­teers as part of a project to inven­tory all the street trees in the City of Delaware.
