
The lengthy and often passionate urban chicken debate that began last fall ended Monday, when Delaware City Council unanimously approved the new law clarifying how agricultural society students may raise barnyard animals.

The Delaware City Planning Commission this week rejected arguments for owning urban chickens, despite arguments from several residents who expressed an interest in the trend.

First off, I have to give kudos to the group Sustainable Delaware for its endeavors in our community. This group has grown from a handful of citizens interested in looking into “greening” our city to a full-fledged group of active community members who care about making Delaware more sustainable and providing all of us opportunities to learn and grow “green wise.” They do this by promoting environmental, social and economic sustainability through special events, both educational and social, and by creating awareness through various programs and the local media.

The Delaware County League of Women Voters recently held a showing of the video documentary Renewal, which portrays stories about America’s religious-environmental movement. The film, produced and directed by Marty Ostrow and Terry Kay Rockefeller, was made possible for showing through a grant from the National League of Women Voters from Oxfam and was co-sponsored by Sustainable Delaware, The Delaware General Health District, the Ecumenical Youth Group and other interested individuals.
