The reports of the death of the Delaware Arts Cas­tle may not have been greatly exag­ger­ated, though they were a bit pre­ma­ture. The orga­ni­za­tion nearly closed its doors for good in 2011, but ended up sur­viv­ing a very dif­fi­cult year finan­cially after imple­ment­ing a num­ber of cost-cutting measures.

The Delaware County Dis­trict Library opened its fourth branch this year. The $8.5-million, 33,000-square-foot Orange Branch Library at 7171 Good­ing Blvd. in Delaware was made pos­si­ble through voter sup­port of a 2009 levy.

After ini­tially telling a Repub­li­can Party offi­cial he was back­ing out, Delaware County Com­mis­sioner Tommy Thomp­son has decided to move for­ward with his plans to run for re-election next year, even with the likely prospect of fac­ing a GOP-backed challenger.

With sev­eral top Delaware County Repub­li­can Party lead­ers in atten­dance, for­mer Gazette pub­lisher Gary Mer­rell offi­cially declared his can­di­dacy for Delaware County com­mis­sioner on Thursday.

Irvin L. Miller, 66, for­merly of Rad­nor, passed away Thurs­day morn­ing (Nov. 10, 2011) at Select Spe­cialty Hos­pi­tal in Colum­bus, after an extended ill­ness.
