European Union weighs greater unity to save euro

BRUSSELS (AP) — Euro­pean lead­ers were wrestling Thurs­day over how much of their sov­er­eignty they are will­ing to give up in a des­per­ate attempt to save the ambi­tious project of con­ti­nen­tal unity that grew from the ashes of World War II.

US will not help pay for Europe’s debt woes

WASHINGTON — Pres­i­dent Barack Obama said Mon­day the United States stands ready to do its part to help Europe with its deep­en­ing debt cri­sis, even as the White House ruled out any finan­cial con­tri­bu­tions from U.S. taxpayers.

Foreign adoptions by Americans plunge again

NEW YORK — The num­ber of for­eign chil­dren adopted by Amer­i­cans fell by 15 per­cent last year, reach­ing the low­est level since 1994 due largely to sharp cut­backs by China and Ethiopia, sources of most adoptees in recent years.

I did it! (Well … maybe not)

On May 5, 1993 three eight year-old boys went miss­ing in an Arkansas sub­urb. Rel­a­tives, friends and neigh­bors searched for them through­out the evening and overnight. In the morn­ing, under the light of day, law enforce­ment teams expanded the search. By mid-afternoon the bod­ies of the three boys had been located in a drainage ditch. One of the boys died of exten­sive blood loss. The other two had drowned. They had com­mit­ted no crime, done no wrong. They were the inno­cent vic­tim of the most heinous crime.

Dow up 423 as Wall Street whipsaws again

NEW YORK — Lurch­ing higher in its week of whiplash, Wall Street recorded one of its biggest gains of all time Thurs­day after investors seized on a few signs that the econ­omy might just be able to avoid a new reces­sion. The Dow Jones indus­trial aver­age soared 423 points. It had already fallen 634 points Mon­day, risen 429 Tues­day and fallen 519 Wednes­day. Never before has the Dow had four 400-point swings in a row.
