Annan ‘impatient and frustrated’ over Syria

BEIRUT — Say­ing he is impa­tient and frus­trated, spe­cial envoy Kofi Annan called on the Syr­ian pres­i­dent Fri­day to imple­ment a U.N.-brokered peace plan fol­low­ing a hor­rific week­end mas­sacre that killed more than 100 people.

Nations pledge millions for Syrian opposition

ISTANBUL — A coali­tion of more than 70 part­ners, includ­ing the United States, pledged Sun­day to send mil­lions of dol­lars and com­mu­ni­ca­tions equip­ment to Syria’s oppo­si­tion groups, sig­nal­ing deeper involve­ment in the con­flict amid a grow­ing belief that diplo­macy and sanc­tions alone can­not end the Dam­as­cus regime’s repression.

7.2 quake in Turkey kills 89, collapses buildings

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Cries of panic and hor­ror filled the air as a 7.2-magnitude earth­quake struck east­ern Turkey, killing at least 89 peo­ple as build­ings pan­caked and crum­pled into rubble.
