WASHINGTON — Amid fresh con­cerns over the safety of Amer­i­can forces, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama on Tues­day said the acci­den­tal burn­ing of Qurans in Afghanistan and the retal­ia­tory killings of U.S. troops gave new cre­dence to the need to end the war.

Activist group: 144 dead across Syria

BEIRUT — A Syr­ian activist group reported Mon­day that 144 peo­ple have been killed across the coun­try, scores of them in the embat­tled oppo­si­tion strong­hold of Homs by secu­rity forces as they tried to flee. A team from the Syr­ian arm of the Red Cross deliv­ered aid to one of the city’s most dan­ger­ous neigh­bor­hoods after days of try­ing to reach the area.

UN has new Iranian nuke arms claims

VIENNA — The U.N. atomic agency plans to reveal intel­li­gence next week sug­gest­ing Iran made com­puter mod­els of a nuclear war­head and other pre­vi­ously undis­closed details on alleged secret work by Tehran on nuclear arms, diplo­mats told The Asso­ci­ated Press on Friday.

GENEVA — Arab nations demanded Mon­day that Syria allow an inter­na­tional probe on whether crimes against human­ity have been com­mit­ted dur­ing the country’s bloody crack­down, illus­trat­ing the grow­ing world iso­la­tion of Pres­i­dent Bashar al-Assad.
