Obama on Afghan: Leave on time, no ‘perfect’ end

CHICAGO — Pres­i­dent Barack Obama and lead­ers around the globe locked in place an Afghanistan exit path Mon­day that will still keep their troops fight­ing and dying there for two more years, acknowl­edg­ing there never will be point at which they can say, “This is all done. This is perfect.”

Twin car bombs in Syrian capital kill dozens

How bet­ter to get set­tlers to move into uncharted and untamed lands than to promise them the sus­tain­abil­ity and wealth that comes from the own­er­ship of land? Give them the land for free on the promise that they will go and set­tle that land, turn­ing it from wilder­ness to use­able farm­land, tim­ber­land or pas­ture. The pol­icy worked for Amer­ica, it worked for the Span­ish in Florida and it worked for Mex­ico in parts of what is now the Amer­i­can Southwest.

Tulsa police say shootings may have been revenge

TULSA, Okla. — Two men were arrested Sun­day in a shoot­ing ram­page that left three peo­ple dead and ter­ror­ized Tulsa’s black com­mu­nity, and police said one sus­pect may have been try­ing to avenge his father’s shoot­ing two years ago by a black man.

Obama, Cameron: Shift in Afghan war role in 2013

WASHINGTON — Deter­mined to show momen­tum in a war marred by set­backs, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama and British Prime Min­ster David Cameron said for the first time Wednes­day that NATO forces would hand over the lead com­bat role to Afghanistan forces next year as the U.S. and its allies aim to get out by the end of 2014.
