WASHINGTON — Count your bless­ings this Thanks­giv­ing. It’s good for you. While it seems pretty obvi­ous that grat­i­tude is a pos­i­tive emo­tion, psy­chol­o­gists for decades rarely delved into the sci­ence of giv­ing thanks. But in the last sev­eral years they have, learn­ing in many exper­i­ments that it is one of humanity’s most pow­er­ful emo­tions. It makes you hap­pier and can change your atti­tude about life, like an emo­tional reset button.

NEW YORK — Occupy Wall Street pro­test­ers clogged streets and tied up traf­fic around the U.S. on Thurs­day to mark two months since the movement’s birth and sig­nal they aren’t ready to quit, despite the breakup of many of their encamp­ments by police. Hun­dreds of peo­ple were arrested, most of them in New York.

US school kids showing slight improvement in math

WASHINGTON — Some progress. Still needs improve­ment. The nation’s report card on math and read­ing shows fourth– and eighth-graders scor­ing their best ever in math and eighth graders mak­ing some progress in read­ing. But the results released Tues­day are a stark reminder of just how far the nation’s school kids are from achiev­ing the No Child Left Behind law’s goal that every child in Amer­ica be pro­fi­cient in math and read­ing by 2014.

Study: Healthy eating is privilege of the rich

SEATTLE — A healthy diet is expen­sive and could make it dif­fi­cult for Amer­i­cans to meet new U.S. nutri­tional guide­lines, accord­ing to a study pub­lished Thurs­day that says the gov­ern­ment should do more to help con­sumers eat health­ier. An update of what used to be known as a food pyra­mid in 2010 had called on Amer­i­cans to eat more foods con­tain­ing potas­sium, dietary fiber, vit­a­min D and cal­cium. But if they did that, the jour­nal Health Affairs said, they would add hun­dreds more dol­lars to their annual gro­cery bill.

Circumcision ban to appear on San Francisco ballot

SAN FRANCISCO — A pro­posal to ban the cir­cum­ci­sion of male chil­dren in San Fran­cisco has been cleared to appear on the Novem­ber bal­lot, set­ting the stage for the nation’s first pub­lic vote on what has long been con­sid­ered a pri­vate fam­ily matter.
