CLEVELAND — A fugitive on the run for more than two years has been arrested on accusations that he ran a scam that collected $100 million in donations from people in dozens of states who believed they were helping U.S. Navy veterans, Ohio’s attorney general and the U.S. Marshals Service announced Tuesday.

Change can be good, but it is seldom painless

While in Columbus last week President Obama suggested that those who oppose alternative energy sources might be considered members of the “flat earth society,” much like people who opposed exploration by the likes of Christopher Columbus. In this instance, according to the president, those who cling to fossil fuels and ignore alternative energy sources are much like ostriches, plunging their heads into the ground and failing to understand the need for change in any active, growing and healthy economy.

Defunct organization fraudulently soliciting

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is warning local residents to avoid making donations to the United States Deputy Sheriff’s Association after it was recently discovered that the organization is under investigation in Virginia for illegally soliciting money through the mail.

United States Postal Service clerks Sherri Fry (foreground) and Cecilia Easton sort daily mail in the USPS Sunbury branch. Fry, who has been with the Sunbury branch for 15 years, said that any closings due to government cutbacks would affect smaller offices in the area without clerks, carriers and rural delivery. Easton, a 31-year veteran of the postal service, said that the holidays were incredibly busy. “We had 2,000 extra packages per day coming in that had to be sorted by us and distributed to carriers due to online shopping. We also had Fed Ex, UPS and DHL dropping off packages for delivery. First-class mail is down due to people paying bills online, but holiday shipping from online purchases helped out a great deal.”

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service said Tuesday it has lost $5.1 billion in the past year, pushing it closer to imminent default on a multibillion-dollar payment and to future bankruptcy as the weak economy and increased Internet use drive down mail volume.

Ethan Callif, a driver for UPS, was traveling his normal delivery route in Liberty Township around 10:45 a.m. Thursday when he noticed a Honda Accord half submerged in a retention pond on the northwest corner of Sawmill Road and Presidential Parkway. He could see the driver, a 28-year-old Worthington woman, struggling to escape. He quickly pulled his truck to the side of the road and dove into the water, boots and all. Califf, 33, of Hilliard, pulled the woman out through the passenger window. She later told medics she was afraid and couldn’t swim. Her car ended up submerged in the pond, estimated to be between 10 and 20 feet deep, after a collision at the nearby intersection with a Chevy Malibu.
