NEW YORK — Sears Hold­ings Corp. plans to close between 100 and 120 Sears and Kmart stores to raise cash after a weak hol­i­day shop­ping sea­son for the retailer.

NEW YORK — Shop­pers seem to be just as enthu­si­as­tic about shop­ping on their com­put­ers and smart­phones on Cyber Mon­day as they were about find­ing deals over the weekend.

Retailers have a robust start to holiday season

More Amer­i­cans hunted for bar­gains over the week­end than ever before as retail­ers lured them online and into stores with big dis­counts and an earlier-than-usual start to the hol­i­day shop­ping sea­son. A record 226 mil­lion shop­pers vis­ited stores and web­sites dur­ing the four-day hol­i­day week­end start­ing on Thanks­giv­ing Day, up from 212 mil­lion last year, accord­ing to early esti­mates by The National Retail Fed­er­a­tion released on Sun­day. Amer­i­cans spent more, too: The aver­age hol­i­day shop­per spent $398.62 over the week­end, up from $365.34 a year ago.

Consumers hit retail stores to give economy boost

WASHINGTON — Con­sumers are giv­ing a mod­est lift to the econ­omy. They spent more on trucks, elec­tron­ics and build­ing sup­plies in Octo­ber to boost retail sales for the fifth straight month.

US stocks fall on European economic, debt worries

NEW YORK — Wor­ries about Europe’s eco­nomic and debt prob­lems sent stocks Tues­day to their first loss in four days. The major indexes bounced up and down in another volatile day. The Dow Jones indus­trial aver­age fell more than 120 points in the first half hour of trad­ing after a report showed that Germany’s econ­omy stalled last quar­ter and dragged down growth for Europe.

Supreme Court limits Wal-Mart sex bias case

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Mon­day blocked a mas­sive sex dis­crim­i­na­tion law­suit against Wal-Mart on behalf of female employ­ees in a deci­sion that makes it harder to mount large-scale bias claims against the nation’s biggest companies.
