WASHINGTON — Con­gres­sional Repub­li­cans on Wednes­day vowed to block the Obama admin­is­tra­tion from sharply cut­ting the U.S. nuclear force, call­ing poten­tial reduc­tions of as much as 80 per­cent in the num­ber of deployed weapons “reck­less lunacy.”

WASHINGTON — Tak­ing a pass on rein­ing in gov­ern­ment growth, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama unveiled a record $3.8 tril­lion election-year bud­get plan Mon­day, call­ing for stimulus-style spend­ing on roads and schools and tax hikes on the wealthy to help pay the costs. The ideas landed with a thud on Capi­tol Hill.

Congress clears $662B defense bill

WASHINGTON — Con­gress passed a mas­sive $662 bil­lion defense bill Thurs­day after months of wran­gling over how to han­dle cap­tured ter­ror sus­pects with­out vio­lat­ing Amer­i­cans’ con­sti­tu­tional rights. A last-minute com­pro­mise pro­duced a truce, but law­mak­ers said the fight is not yet over.

Dems drop millionaires tax in year-end dispute

WASHINGTON — Democ­rats backed away from their demand for higher taxes on mil­lion­aires as part of leg­is­la­tion to extend Social Secu­rity tax cuts for most Amer­i­cans on Wednes­day as Con­gress strug­gled to clear crit­i­cal year-end bills with­out trig­ger­ing a par­tial gov­ern­ment shutdown.

Senate backs military custody of terror suspects

WASHINGTON — The Democratic-controlled Sen­ate moved method­i­cally Thurs­day to com­plete a mas­sive defense bill that would deny sus­pected ter­ror­ists, even U.S. cit­i­zens seized within the nation’s bor­ders, the right to trial and sub­ject them to indef­i­nite detention.

New device uses light to screen for melanoma

WASHINGTON — Der­ma­tol­o­gists will soon get some high-tech help decid­ing which suspicious-looking moles should be removed and checked for melanoma, the dead­liest form of skin can­cer. The Food and Drug Admin­is­tra­tion on Wednes­day approved a first-of-its-kind device, called MelaFind, that makes detailed, dig­i­tal images of skin growths and uses a com­puter to ana­lyze them for signs of can­cer, offer­ing a sort of sec­ond opin­ion to doc­tors. The device is approved only for der­ma­tol­o­gists and only for use on growths that don’t have obvi­ous signs of can­cer but still have one or two wor­ri­some traits.
