A big tax present for 160 million wage-earners

WASHINGTON — Amer­i­cans are get­ting an election-year tax present. Con­gress voted with rare speed and coop­er­a­tion Fri­day to extend a Social Secu­rity pay­roll tax cut for 160 mil­lion work­ers and to renew unem­ploy­ment ben­e­fits for mil­lions more who haven’t seen a pay­check in six months.

Negotiators reach tentative payroll tax cut pact

WASHINGTON — House-Senate talks on renew­ing a pay­roll tax cut that deliv­ers about $20 a week to the aver­age worker yielded a ten­ta­tive agree­ment Tues­day, with law­mak­ers plan­ning to unveil the pact Wednes­day and send­ing the mea­sure to Pres­i­dent Barack Obama as early as this week.

Debt panel poised to admit failure

WASHINGTON (AP) — A spe­cial deficit-reduction super­com­mit­tee appears likely to admit fail­ure on Mon­day, unable or unwill­ing to com­pro­mise on a mix of spend­ing cuts and tax increases required to meet its assign­ment of sav­ing tax­pay­ers at least $1.2 tril­lion over the com­ing decade.

Deficit gridlock looms, supercommittee deadlocked

WASHINGTON — Dead­line near­ing, the deficit-reduction talks in Con­gress sank toward grid­lock Fri­day after super­com­mit­tee Democ­rats rejected a late Repub­li­can offer that included next-to-nothing in new tax rev­enue. Each side maneu­vered to blame the other for a loom­ing stalemate.
