Ohio occupation protests grow, spread

COLUMBUS — Ohioans inspired by the Occupy Wall Street move­ment and angry at what they see as too much cor­po­rate influ­ence on gov­ern­ment have expanded their protests through­out the state — both in size, loca­tion and diver­sity. In the city’s first demon­stra­tion, about 300 pro­test­ers gath­ered in down­town Youngstown on Sat­ur­day to rally against cor­po­rate greed and Ohio’s con­tested new col­lec­tive bar­gain­ing law, The Vin­di­ca­tor news­pa­per reported.

Ohio 1st in US to sell prison to private company

COLUMBUS — A lockup along the shores of Lake Erie has become the first state prison in the nation to be sold to a pri­vate com­pany. Lake Erie Cor­rec­tional Insti­tu­tion in north­east­ern Ohio’s Ashtab­ula County is the only one of five state pris­ons up for sale that will be sold, state offi­cials said Thurs­day. Cor­rec­tions Cor­po­ra­tion of Amer­ica will buy it for $72.7 mil­lion, more than the $50 mil­lion needed from the pri­va­ti­za­tion effort to bal­ance the state’s prison budget.

Kasich OKs racetrack slots in casino operator deal

CLEVELAND — Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Wednes­day he is mov­ing for­ward with legal­ized race­track slot machines and mak­ing tax con­ces­sions to one of the state’s two casino devel­op­ers in his efforts to get more money from expanded gam­bling for taxpayers.
