Ohio officials to return 5 exotic animals to widow

REYNOLDSBURG — State offi­cials will return five sur­viv­ing exotic ani­mals to a woman whose hus­band released dozens of wild crea­tures before com­mit­ting sui­cide. The Ohio Depart­ment of Agri­cul­ture announced the deci­sion Mon­day at an agency hear­ing in which the state was to defend its author­ity to quar­an­tine the ani­mals — two leop­ards, two pri­mates and a bear — on sus­pi­cion of infec­tious diseases.

Van plunges off NY road into zoo grounds; 7 killed

NEW YORK — An out-of-control van careered across sev­eral lanes of traf­fic on a high­way over­pass Sun­day, then plunged more than 50 feet off the side of the road and landed in a ravine on the grounds of the nation’s largest city zoo, killing all seven peo­ple aboard, includ­ing three chil­dren, author­i­ties said.

COLUMBUS — An Ohio law­maker is propos­ing that own­ers of exotic ani­mals be sub­jected to back­ground checks and required to fence their prop­erty — mea­sures sup­port­ers say might have saved dozens of lions, tigers, and other wild crea­tures that were shot by author­i­ties months ago after their sui­ci­dal owner let them loose.
