Lebanese TV presenter deported from Egypt arrives in Beirut

BEIRUT (AP) — The lawyer of a prominent Lebanese journalist who hosted a talk show on Egypt’s private ONTV says she has arrived in Beirut after being deported by Egyptian authorities.

Liliane Daoud was detained on Monday at her house in Cairo, in front of her 10-year-old daughter. Hours later, she was escorted to the airport, where she took a flight to Beirut shortly before midnight.

Lawyer Zyad el-Elaimy says she arrived in Beirut early Tuesday. El-Elaimy says on his Twitter account that Daoud’s first comment was that she will challenge her deportation.

Daoud couldn’t immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday.

Daoud’s talk show aired critical views of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s government. Since taking office, the government has shown little tolerance for criticism, banning protests and taking programs off the air.
