Arrest made in theft from unmarked Columbus police car

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A 34-year-old Ohio man has been arrested in connection with the theft of an M16 rifle, a handgun and two ballistic vests from an unmarked Columbus police car.

The Columbus Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/29KkbuI ) Craig Stewart was charged with two counts of felony theft after police say surveillance video showed him and another man pulling off the heist.

The theft occurred Wednesday evening on West Broad Street while a plainclothes officer was eating at a steak house nearby. Security footage from the restaurant led Franklin County sheriffs to the Hamilton Township man.

Police say Stewart told officers that he sold the guns and body armor for $500 and 2 grams of heroin. It’s unknown whether the items were recovered by police.

No other arrests have been made in the case.
