Senior forward Jaggar Brooker had a goal and 2 assists to highlight the Ohio Wesleyan offense in a 5-0 non-conference decision over Capital on Wednesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

The Bishops took an early lead when senior midfielder Justin Carro crossed the ball to junior back Gabe O’Reilly, who headed it home exactly 8 minutes into the evening’s action.

The first half would end with the Bishops holding the 1-0 lead, with both junior goalkeeper Sam Whitman and Comet netminder Ethan Ogden making saves to keep the game close.

Ohio Wesleyan increased its lead during the opening minutes of the second half when freshman midfielder Logan Lewarchick fielded a pass from freshman back Alex Bucher, then sent the ball back to Bucher. Bucher crossed to junior forward Aiden Wightman, who redirected it inside the right post at the 47:38 mark.

The Bishops made it 3-0 after a run into the box and a shot by Brooker that Ogden saved, with Carro pouncing on the rebound and sending it inside the right post in the 73rd minute.

Ohio Wesleyan increased the lead to 4-0 when O’Reilly sent a long ball up the right side to sophomore forward Colin Callahan, who centered to Brooker. Brooker redirected the ball behind Ogden and into the goal with 12 minutes to play.

Senior forward Franklin Rodriguez wrapped up the scoring in the 81st minute. Brooker sent the ball outside to freshman back Paddy O’Reilly, and O’Reilly centered it, with the ball bouncing past an onrushing Callahan to Rodriguez, who finished the chance to the left post with 9:56 remaining.

“We needed a game like this,” said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. “We’ve been having trouble scoring — we’ve had plenty of shots but we’re not scoring. We don’t play again until next Friday, and we’ll try to refine things and get better. The first few weeks (of the season) were brutal, with ranked teams and road games, and hopefully this will jump-start us. (Mathias) Koo played well, and (Ryan) Betts played great. Overall, it was a good night, but now we’ve got some work to do.”

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Capital, 29-9. Whitman made 4 saves and freshman Zach Herzberg completed the shutout in the Bishop goal.
