Senior attacker Matt Maier (Summit, N.J.) and sophomore attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) each scored twice as 12th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 5-1 run, and Maier contributed a goal and 2 assists to a later 8-0 run that helped the Bishops break things open en route to a 20-5 non-conference win over Otterbein on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.

Senior midfielder Derek Todd (Edina, Minn.) put the Bishops on the scoreboard just over a minute into the contest, and Maier followed with a goal for a 2-0 Bishop lead at the 11:18 mark of the first quarter.

Otterbein closed to within 2-1 on a man-up score by Nick Tholt, but Todd fed Maier for a goal less than a minute later, then Tennant scored back-to-back goals to make it 5-1.

The Cardinals got scores from Ian Moews and Joe Sanfillipo to pull within 5-3 after the first quarter.

Ohio Wesleyan outscored Otterbein, 4-0, during the second quarter, getting goals from sophomore attacker Conor Caffrey (Scituate, Mass./Brewster (N.H.) Academy), junior midfielder Trent Schulte (Coronado, Calif.), freshman midfielder Lucas Smith (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove), and junior midfielder Derek Bacchiochi (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) to extend the margin to 9-3 at the half.

Tennant, sophomore midfielder Cole Jamieson (Okemos, Mich.), Schulte, and freshman attacker Martin Dioli (Yarmouth, Maine/Salisbury (Conn.) School) rang up goals as the Bishops opened the third quarter with 4 straight scores for a 13-3 advantage.

Junior attacker Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and Caffrey added goals later in the third quarter, and the Bishops outscored the Cardinals, 5-1, during the fourth quarter.

Maier led the Bishops with 2 goals and 2 assists, while Tennant finished with 3 goals and Caffrey and Schulte contributed 2 goals and an assist apiece. Freshman Joey Sichenzia (Sayville, N.Y.) recorded 5 saves during the first 3 quarters, and freshman Andrew Halmi (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck), junior Xander Pacilio (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill), and freshman Jackson Markley (Chagrin Falls) minded the Ohio Wesleyan crease during the fourth quarter.

Five different players scored for Otterbein. James Gundling and Connor Hinson combined for 18 saves in the Cardinal goal.

Lost in the lopsided final score was a reunion between two former Delaware Hayes standouts — Otterbein’s Sanfillipo and OWU defenseman Jordan Carlson.

Both were two-year captains at Hayes. Both were members of the inaugural Delaware lacrosse program in 2007 and both were members of the 2012 and 2013 state championship teams.
