Child abuse trial begins today

The trial is scheduled to begin today for a Delaware man accused of physically endangering an 11-month old in January.

Abdurahman Mohamed Abdurahman, 23, is scheduled to begin trial today in Delaware County Common Pleas Court to face a count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and two counts of endangering children, third-degree felonies. It is expected to last at least four days.

The charges stemmed from an incident on Jan. 13 when Abdurahman and his then-girlfriend, Natasha Moore, 29, took Moore’s son Phoenyx to the hospital because he was unresponsive. Prosecutors report that doctors at the hospital said the boy had little-to-no oxygen in his brain when he arrived at the hospital.

Prosecutors report the boy has been released from the hospital, but doctors say his life will likely be cut short due to injuries suffered.

Prosecutors alleged that Abdurahman physically injured Phoenyx and caused the damage.

Natasha Moore was originally set to stand trial with Abdurahman, but entered a guilty plea to a charge of child endangerment, a third-degree felony at a change of plea hearing on Nov. 15. At the hearing Moore said she was negligent and should have taken Phoenyx to the hospital sooner.

Moore will be sentenced on Dec. 28.

During an interview with detectives on Jan. 13, Abdurahman said he and Moore were the only people to have been in custody of the boy for the previous 48 hours.

The pair were indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury on Jan. 22. They were in the Delaware County Jail Monday after both of their bonds were revoked for violations.
