The Baron blast was just that for members of the Buckeye Valley boys and girls cross country teams Saturday in Delaware.
Both squads took home team and individual championships — BV freshman Chloe Dawson won the girls’ race and Zach Kreft, the defending Division II state champ, surprised no one by winning on the boys’ side.
Dawson started her high school career in style, posting the second-fastest time in school history, 19:30.55, en route to taking top honors in her first varsity race. Jenny Brooks holds the current school record (19:15) — a mark she set back in 2001.
Other top BV performers on the girls’ side included Bailey Kreft, who finished eighth in 21:01.63; and Chayse Arnhold, Jia Radloff, Lane Graham, Ashley Beatty and Veronika Legg, who captured spots 14-18.
“This was a great way to start the official racing season for our girls,” BV coach Nate Ritz said. “The girls have a great mix of upper-class leaders and young talent as six of the top seven girls from today are freshmen.”
Delaware Hayes was also in action, finishing sixth on the girls’ side thanks to a strong showing from Lauren English, who finished fifth among individuals in 20:35.06. Grace Fowler was the second Pacer to cross the finish line, closing 28th in 23:03.65.
The Buckeye Valley boys, meanwhile, used senior leadership to get the job done. Zach Kreft won in 16:28.37 while Nathan Holst finished fifth, Gavin Shearer closed seventh, Nathan Heiser crossed the line 17th overall and Jacob Zinn finished 29th among the 205 individuals in action. All five are seniors.
“I’m very pleased with how the boys are looking right now,” Ritz said. “They’ve put in countless miles this summer and are anxious to get racing.”
Liberty, which took places nine through 16, finished second and Hayes closed ninth. Nolan Vondracek led the Patriots with a time of 17:40.65 while Avery Latta paced the Pacers with a 68th-place performance of 19:40.54.
GIRLS GOLF
Olentangy Orange, led by Ashley Au’s medal-winning round, had four girls finish in the top six to lead their team the title at Saturday’s Bear/Lion fall open at Crooks Creek.
Au led the way with a 71 while Riley Dean, Alyssa Kim and Natalia Sompolvorachai finished with 73s. The Pioneers carded a combined 290.
Olentangy Liberty was also at the event, finishing third with a combined 321. Priyasha Kota led the Patriots with a 76.
BOYS GOLF
Olentangy and Olentangy Liberty posted solid showings at Saturday’s Pinnacle Invitational at Pinnacle Golf Club, finishing third and sixth, respectively.
Both found themselves tied with other teams near the top of the leaderboard when the action wrapped up. The Braves, who fired a combined 329, edged Upper Arlington’s A team for the third spot thanks to a better fifth-man score while the Patriots settled for sixth after finishing tied with Upper Arlington’s B team. Both shot 331s, but Liberty had a worse fifth-man score.
Olentangy was led by Luke Boerner’s 76 while Trey Wilson and Bryce Reed smoothed out the squad’s top three with respective rounds of 79 and 86.
The Patriots were powered by Trey Rath’s 76 while Cole Corder and Josh Steyer shot 84s.
Only Dublin Jerome (299) and St. Charles (316) finished with better rounds than Olentangy.
VOLLEYBALL
Hayes put together three solid showings over the weekend, beating Grandview Heights, River Valley and Johnstown to win Saturday’s Cardington Invitational.
The Pacers beat the Bobcats 25-12, 25-15, took care of the Vikings 25-20, 28-26 and rallied past the Johnnies 22-25, 25-19, 15-9.
Julia Kaylor boosted Hayes in the title match, finishing with 11 kills. Sydney Krewson and Julia Justice were also solid, collecting seven kills apiece, while Lauryn Rocassin had a team-best 18 assists and Audrey Hannahs anchored the defense with 16 digs.
Delaware Christian 2, Columbus Academy 1; CSG 2, Delaware Christian 0
Delaware Christian split a couple matches over the weekend, falling to CSG in two sets before taking care of Columbus Academy in three.
Lyssi Snouffer led the way in the the Eagles’ 25-19, 19-25, 25-23 win, finishing with 10 kills, 18 digs and two blocks. Other top contributors included Maggie Broadfoot, who had six kills, two blocks and an ace; Anna Fuller, who finished with 17 digs, two kills and an ace; Hannah Maurer, who had a team-best five blocks; and Erin Bauslaugh, who had 29 assists, two aces, two blocks and a kill in the win.
DCS fell to CSG 20-25, 25-23, but did get another strong game out of Snouffer, who finished with 14 digs, eight kills and a block.
BOYS SOCCER
Isaac Rindfuss and Keenan Sibert scored first-half goals and Temirlan Snedden added the equalizer in the second half as Delaware Christian battled to a 3-3 tie against visiting Bishop Ready Saturday afternoon.
