Orange passes early-season test

The Olentangy Orange boys soccer team picked up a solid early-season win earlier this week in Lewis Center, using a late goal to slip past visiting Westerville North 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Both teams had chances early, but took turns failing to convert corner kicks in the first seven minutes.

The Pioneers’ Matthew English ripped a shot high and Griffin Zavislak fired one low and a little wide as the game stayed scoreless within the first 20 minutes.

Orange’s Greg Rizo nearly found the back of the next with seven minutes left in the first half, but North keeper Donovan Gooden made a diving stop to keep things even at the break.

The Pioneers’ Garret Comerford made a diving stop of his own early in the second half to keep the game scoreless and the Warriors saw a shot dink off the post with seven minutes left.

That’s when Orange struck.

It happened in transition and it happened fast. After the Warriors’ near miss, the Pioneers’ Tyler Covert rocketed an long pass to a streaking Jude Osei, who slipped behind North’s back line, beat a defender to the ball and slid a shot into the far corner for what proved to be the game’s only goal with 6:21 left.

Needless to say, Orange held on from there.
