UA rallies past Hayes, 2-1

The Delaware Hayes girls soccer team secured the early momentum, but host Upper Arlington didn’t take long to get it back en route to a 2-1 non-league win Thursday night.

The Golden Bears (4-0) got a good look early, but Hayes keeper Chloe Skeens snagged a shot from Addison Szollodi without much trouble.

The Pacers (3-1-1) looked to answer in transition — Ally Dudley’s cross found Adrionna Brown in stride — but Brown’s shot from a tight angle hit the side of the net.

Hayes broke through a few minutes later, though, as Reese Laaksonen lined a rocket into the upper corner from more than 20 yards out to break the scoring seal with 29 minutes left in the opening half.

From there, as if a switch flipped, UA took over.

Elise Karas scored off the ensuing kickoff, dribbling through the Hayes back line before beating a diving Skeens with a shot just inside the far post.

After evening things up less than a minute after falling behind, the Bears didn’t take long to go up for good as Karas scored her second of the game, this time off a feed from Soph Khelashvili with 13:23 to play until halftime.

Hayes had a few looks at a potential equalizer in the second half — a handball gave Dudley a dangerous direct kick from just outside the box with 22 minutes left — but UA keeper Alina Montero, who finished with three saves, and the defense held on.

Skeens more than did her part to keep the game tight, too, finishing with 13 saves in the setback.
