Barons bury Cardinals on Homecoming

The Buckeye Valley football team started fast and poured it on late en route to a lopsided 31-13 non-league win over visiting St. Charles Friday night in Delaware.

The Baron (5-2) defense set the tone on the very first drive as Cam Grout and Wade Carey converged on the St. Charles quarterback for a sack on third down, forcing a punt.

The Cardinals (4-3) couldn’t get anything going on their next drive either and, after the defense forced a three and out, the BV offense went to work.

Quarterback Nathan Huss hit Hayden Mays for 38 yards to the St. Charles 31 to get the drive going and, a few plays later, on a fourth-and-two play from the 18, Huss used a nice play-action fake to fool the defense before rolling out to his right and finding tight end David Burwell wide open in the end zone for a touchdown at the 3:53 mark of the first quarter.

The Cardinals tried to answer with a heavy dose of Michael Zarick, but a turnover on downs gave the ball back to the Barons.

Two plays later, they were back in the end zone.

Malakhi Ross started the ensuing drive with a powerful eight-yard run before Huss hooked up with Le’Den Jones for a 60-yard scoring strike with 11:13 left in the second quarter. Jones got behind the defense on a deep slant before Huss hit him in stride. The senior receiver took care of the rest, outrunning the Cardinal defense to the house.

St. Charles slowed down the BV offense the rest of the half, but couldn’t crack the defense as Tristan Pemberton came up with an interception in the final minute of the second quarter to keep it a two-score spread at the break.

Things got worse for the Cards before they got better as BV scored the first 17 points of the second half to all but seal the deal.

Huss converted a fourth-and-one from the St. Charles 45 with a keeper up the middle on the first drive of the third and, a play later, hooked up with Jones for another long TD pass to balloon the lead to 21-0 early in the third.

On the Cardinals’ ensuing possession, Pemberton came up with his second interception of the game, this time returning it 23 yards for a touchdown to make it a 28-0 game.

The Barons’ Gradin Gentner hit a chip-shot field goal with 9:57 left to make it 31-0 and force a running clock until the Cardinals scored a few touchdowns in garbage time — the first a four-yard TD run by Zarick with 3:54 left before a fumble recovery in the end zone after a muffed punt smoothed out the scoring summary.

Big Walnut 31, Worthington Kilbourne 0

The Golden Eagles picked up their sixth straight win in impressive fashion, blanking the visiting Wolves Friday night in Sunbury.

Big Walnut (6-1, 4-0) got on the board when Nolan Buirley powered into the end zone from two yards out in the first quarter and added a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to take a 21-0 lead into halftime. Brody Hatfield scored on a 59-yard pass from Eli Stumpf before Stumpf hit Jackson Bowers for another TD before the break.

Jace Murray scored from 16 yards out in the third before Jake Neff hit a 27-yard field goal in the fourth to smooth out the scoring summary.

Delaware Hayes 24, Westerville South 21

The Pacers scored in all four quarters, including a 28-yard field goal off the foot of Chaz Sakala in the fourth that proved to be the difference in an OCC win over the visiting Wildcats Friday night in Delaware.

Favour Akih, who finished with 229 yards on the ground, was responsible for a pair of the touchdowns — the first coming on a 23 yard run in the first quarter and the second a 65-yarder in the third.

Caleb Rowe hit Gavin Shears for a 60-yard TD in the second to account for Hayes’ (5-2, 2-2) other score.

Olentangy Berlin 43, Thomas Worthington 14

The Bears (5-2, 2-0) stayed unbeaten in league play with a convincing win over the visiting Cardinals Friday night in Delaware.

Alejandro Aguilar led the charge, finishing with 161 yards on the ground to go with a pair of touchdowns. QB Aiden Eviston was also steady, closing with 133 passing yards to go with 34 rushing yards and a couple of rushing touchdowns of his own.
