Junior midfielder Mitchell Cosler and senior forward Tyler Duhl scored first-half goals and senior forward Franklin Rodriguez added a pair of second-half scores to help the Ohio Wesleyan men’s soccer team to a 6-0 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Hiram on Tuesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

The Bishops took the lead in the 18th minute when junior forward Christopher Guerra sent the ball ahead to senior back Brady West, who centered it to Cosler, who tucked it into the right side of the Terrier goal.

Duhl made it 2-0 late in the first half. Ohio Wesleyan had earned a corner kick, and Cosler sent the ball in, with Rodriguez playing it on into the box. The ball bounced off a Hiram defender and popped up into the air, and Duhl was there to head it home with 5:30 remaining in the half.

Rodriguez opened the second-half scoring in the 48th minute, fielding a centering pass from West, then taking a touch past a Hiram defender and firing a shot that glanced off another Terrier defender and into the goal.

Senior forward Jaggar Brooker set up the Bishops’ fourth goal, making a run along the left end line and centering to Rodriguez, who tipped it into the net in the 55th minute.

In the 66th minute, freshman back Alex Bucher had a shot stopped by Hiram keeper Tyler Jurgensen, but senior midfielder Justin Carro pounced on the rebound and scored.

The Bishops closed out the scoring in the 85th minute when senior midfielder Drew Doza sent the ball ahead to junior forward Aiden Wightman, who played it ahead to freshman forward Sam Owusu Sarfo, who made a run and squeezed off a shot into the Hiram goal.

“This was a good game for this time of the season,” said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. “We got a lot of guys in, and we scored a lot of goals. It was good timing for that kind of game.”

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Hiram, 41-6. Junior goalkeeper Sam Whitman made 2 saves and freshman Zach Hertzberg completed the shutout in the Bishop goal.

VOLLEYBALL

Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Dieball led the Ohio Wesleyan offense with 14 kills as the Bishops swept Kenyon in a North Coast Athletic Conference match on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops defeated the Owls by scores of 25-10, 25-12, 25-20.

Dieball delivered 2 kills as the Bishops reeled off 5 straight points to open the match, then had back-to-back aces as Ohio Wesleyan stretched the margin to 10-2. Kenyon closed to within 10-5 after a kill by Olivia Gumz, but a 9-2 run that included 2 more Dieball kills and a kill and an ace from junior setter Lily Bechina made it 19-7, and 2 more Dieball kills down the stretch helped the Bishops close out the set.

Two more Dieball kills and consecutive kills from senior middle blocker Claire Solberg helped Ohio Wesleyan to a 7-3 lead in the second set, but the Owls rallied to within 10-7 on a kill by Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese. Ohio Wesleyan countered with a 9-3 run that concluded with a kill and a block by freshman middle blocker Jordanne Shannon, and Dieball added 2 more kills down the stretch, including set point that gave the Bishops a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set saw Kenyon break a 5-5 tie with a 4-0 burst that featured kills from Sophia Menke and Aura Barinas. The Owls still led, 16-15, after a Gumz kill, but Ohio Wesleyan rattled off 4 straight points, getting kills from Dieball, sophomore outside hitter Mason Campbell, and Solberg to take the lead for good, and Campbell had a kill and an ace to help the Bishops complete the sweep.

Dieball led the Bishops with 14 kills with only 2 errors in 30 swings for a .400 attack percentage. Bechina finished with 30 assists. Solberg recorded a team-high 4 blocks and sophomore defensive specialist Avery Krause had 11 digs.
