Closer look at north-central townships

Here’s a brief look at three townships in north-central Delaware County that are above or surround the city of Delaware: Marlboro, Troy and Delaware townships.

Delaware Township

Much of the city of Delaware is in Delaware Township, although the township is in charge of those areas not annexed into the city.

“Delaware Township consists of over 12 miles of roads, intertwined with the City of Delaware,” said the township website. “The newest subdivisions in Delaware Township are Royal Dornoch, and Myers Glen. Another feature of Delaware Township is the Stratford Ecological Center Stratford Ecological Center located at 3083 Liberty Road. In 1991, this 236-acre property was declared a privately owned state nature preserve, meaning it cannot be developed.”

The trustees are Beau Euton, Kevin Hennessy and Randy Ormeroid. The fiscal officer is Patricia Montgomery, and the assistant fiscal officer is Dedra Hall. The Zoning Commission Board is Jerome Donovon, Justin Lee, Adam Mowery and Dave Rathje. The zoning inspectors are Mike Benedetti and Walt Thompson. The Board of Zoning Appeals consists of Amy Macioli-Cermak, Larry Fink, William Rietz and David Root. Jarrod Hobbs is road superintendent; Brooke James is the township hall event coordinator.

The township hall is at 2950 Liberty Road, Delaware. For more information, visit www.delawaretownshipohio.org (website).

Marlboro Township

This is the smallest of the county’s 18 townships at 12 square miles and a 2020 population of 295 people. It borders two other counties — Marion to the northwest (Prospect and Waldo townships) and Morrow (Westfield Township) to the northeast. Neighboring Delaware County townships are Oxford (east), Troy (south) and Radnor (west).

“Marlboro Township was named after Marlborough, New York, the native hometown of many of its early settlers,” said the website Wikipedia. “Statewide, the only other Marlboro Township is located in Stark County… Fire protection in Marlboro Township is the responsibility of the Fort Morrow Fire District, and emergency medical services are provided by Delaware County EMS.”

The township hall is at 666 Norton Road, Waldo. The township does not have a website.

Troy Township

Just above Delaware city and township and split by road and waterways is Troy Township. It is bound to the north by Marlboro, to the west by Radnor, and to the east by Oxford and Brown townships.

“Troy Township is mainly a single-family residential, rural area,” said its website. “With the northern expansion of Delaware City, the southern portion of the Township may encounter suburban growth pressures in the future. The Olentangy River and Delaware Lake are two significant features in the township recommended for conservation through lower densities and encouragement of conservation subdivision design. The U.S. 23 corridor is to be the commercial base of the township, with access management and architectural guidelines strongly emphasized.”

The trustees are Vice Chair Earl Lehner, Troy Morris and Chair Doug Price. Cindy Crowl is zoning secretary.

The township hall is at 4293 U.S. Route 23 N., Delaware. For more information, visit Troy Township, Delaware Ohio (Facebook) or troytwpdelawareoh.gov (website).
