OLSD earns another five-star report card

For the second consecutive year, the Olentangy Local School District (OLSD) has received five stars on the state report card.

The Ohio School Report Cards includes performance information provided by schools and districts, including academic, financial, and opportunity-to-learn data. The cards are comprised of six categories: achievement, progress, gap closing, graduation, early literacy, and college, career, workforce, and military readiness. Grades are awarded in half-star increments.

OLSD received a full five stars in all but one category, being awarded four stars in the progress category. In the progress category, which measures the academic performance of students compared to expected growth on Ohio’s state tests, the report card states the district fell short of student growth expectations on science testing for fifth grade students.

The achievement component measures students’ academic achievement using each level of performance on Ohio’s state tests. The gap closing component shows how well schools are meeting the performance expectations for students in English language arts, math, and graduation. It also measures how schools are doing in supporting English learners to increase language proficiency, reducing chronic absenteeism for all students, and identifying gifted students and providing gifted services.

“The five-star ratings that Olentangy received indicate that the district significantly exceeds state standards in academic achievement, early literacy standards, closing educational gaps, and graduation rates,” a press release from the district stated. “Olentangy Schools also earned a four-star rating in progress, indicating there is significant evidence that the district exceeded student growth expectations.”

Superintendent Todd Meyer said of the district’s report card, “Receiving an overall five-star rating as a district for the second consecutive year is something to be proud of. The state report card is just one indication of Olentangy’s educational excellence and student learning experience, and our staff will continue to facilitate maximum learning for every student, both within and outside of tested areas.”

Dr. Michelle Blackley, chief academic officer for Olentangy Schools, added, “We are pleased that the state report card reflects Olentangy’s commitment to academic excellence. Olentangy is one of just two districts in the state of Ohio with over 10,000 students to earn five stars overall, and the only district over 10,000 students to receive five stars in the achievement component. This is a testament to the personalized learning environments our principals, teachers, and support staff create every day for students.”
